What I Do

Andy Bassford’s Jazz Conspiracy

ABJC is my Caribbean Jazz project. It’s part of a miniature musical movement in NYC that’s sprung up over the last few years. Along with Earl Appleton’s Overproof, John Speck’sand Anant Pradhan’s groups, and Kevin Batchelor’s NYC Ska Orchestra, ABJC consists of musicians from diverse backgrounds who have significant experience with both Caribbean rhythms and American jazz. Many of us were inspired by the pioneering work of Monty Alexander in this area. We’ve been playing this new hybrid over the last few years in the Caribbean venues in the outer boroughs of NYC, pretty much outside the notice of the straight ahead NYC jazz world. ABJC plays a mixture of straight ahead jazz, reggae, dance hall, Latin, and other Caribbean rhythms. We apply these rhythms to well known standards as well as my original jazz writing.

Andy Bassford solo shows

Since the release of my album, “The Harder They Strum,” I’ve put together a solo show of reggae guitar, performing songs from the album as well as new reggae instrumentals I haven’t yet recorded. I’ve been touring the New England area with Naya Rockers, a prominent Boston based reggae band, as well as performing at Chicago’s Square Roots Festival with the Chicago Jamaica Jazz Ensemble. I’d love to do more of these shows in other parts of the country. Contact me through the website if interested.

Lessons

Yes! I give lessons! For the time being all lessons are online. I can teach via Zoom, Google Meetings, or Messenger, whichever medium you prefer. Contact me for specifics through the Contact page on this website or go to the Lessons and Clinics page to learn more.

Production

I specialize in old-school production techniques. Though I’m up to date with current technologies, my specialty is working with performers. I like recording bands and singers who are accompanied by human beings rather than samples and sequencers. I’m particularly helpful with bands and singers who are new to serious recording. Visit the Production page for more information.

Recording Sessions

I’d love to play on your record! Contact me for rates and details. At the moment I am recording either at home or in local NYC studios that observe proper social distancing and masking guidelines. I use Cubase and can provide you tracks in any file format and resolution you prefer.

Shows and Tours

I toured anywhere from three to six months a year for decades. I’ve done less of it in the past few years for a variety of reasons. But I’m always up for it if the music, the people, and the business are right. Go to the Shows and Tours page for more information.

    1. Hi, Terry! Glad you enjoyed the story. Just trying to narrow down which Errol your dad is! I know quite a few of them. Best.

  1. Shuzze me; “No mention of CoolRunnings!–Blasphymy!!!”
    Hi Andy,
Many a nite sleeping on a futon in the back of a smoke filled van a’la Coolrunnings selection!
I will never forget the gig in a college in Greenwich Village and we were about to go on and we were wondering where you were when all of a sudden we heard this rumbling coming the the ave, with the sound of a homeless chariot (shopping cart) was the famous Silvertone Sterio Amp on wheels!
Think of you often; from Jamaica thru Europe etc. I am the founder of the Exodus Rhythm Reggae Band. ( Pray for me as they are all of Jamaican Roots and I’m the
    mighty Whitey)

    1. No mention of Cool Runnings! True. I haven’t finished the chronology yet. Thanks for reminding me. I should put the 12″ in the discography as well. Good to hear from you. Where are you these days?
